Sam is almost ready

Sam and Max are both advancing steadily on their feeding plans, but Sam started his plan sooner so he's ahead by a few days. He hasn't slowed at all, and unless he suddenly decides he doesn't like to eat anymore, he'll be ready to come home by tomorrow! Since this last phase of his plan is a trial run of how he'll do at home, his feeding tube has finally been removed, which makes him all the cuter.

We did the "car seat test" that verifies he's able to safely sit in our car seat, which is another prerequisite for him being released from the hospital.

He passed the test with flying colors... by sleeping through the entire thing. If only all of life's tests were this easy.

As recommended by the nurses, Amanda and I will "room in" at the hospital tonight, taking complete care of Sam for about a day. This allows us to get the full parenting experience before we take Sam home, while having the safety of nurses readily available if we need help at any time. I'm looking forward to having Sam home, but I'm not looking forward to living at the hospital for a whole day. The food is mediocre and the beds aren't that comfortable, so if I'm going to get lousy sleep because of a new baby I'd rather do it from the comfort of my home than the discomfort of a hospital room. However, I recognize the benefit of the exercise, and I'm still no parenting expert, so this additional opportunity to practice in a safe environment is worthwhile. Hopefully all goes well over the next day and we get to take Sam home tomorrow.

Max will have his tube for a few more days, and could be ready to come home early next week.

I like this photo because it shows how small a baby's arms are. Max can barely reach past the top of his own head!

  2. I love the photo of Max touching his head, but I hardly recognize Sam with nothing covering his face - he's so cute! It sounds as everything is really promising for a homecoming tomorrow. I hope you will be able to get some sleep.

  3. So exciting that Max will get to come home. I'm a little envious of your parenting journey - I remember Rich and I nearly splitting just trying to get Taryn into the car seat when we brought her home.....no one was watching, not one was helping it was some intense parenting moments!
