Sam's first days at home

When Amanda and I brought Sam home we came up with a plan to handle nighttime care; we would split the night, with each person covering a six hour shift so that the other person could get uninterrupted rest. I sleep from 9pm to 3am while Amanda takes care of Sam, and then we switch and Amanda sleeps from 3am to 9am while I take over duties. So far it's been working for us, but it's not yet clear to me if this plan is sustainable. It will still take some time to adjust to these hours, but I believe getting these reasonable chunks of uninterrupted sleep is more beneficial than getting a longer duration of frequently interrupted sleep. Hopefully this plan continues to work when Max comes home, and one of us can care for two babies at once!

Some new parent observations:
  • Sam sleeps a lot
  • Sam often makes lots of noises while he sleeps. It's actually quite difficult to sleep in the same room as him since he is such a noisy sleeper. Sometimes he sleeps very quietly.
  • Sam poops a lot
  • It takes him longer to drink a bottle than I thought it would. Obviously a baby can't chug a bottle of milk in seconds like an adult, but I was getting confused with him not being hungry and just eating slowly. Having a stopwatch/timer helps with this, because the passage of time feels vastly different at 3am than it does at 3pm.
  • The sunrises are beautiful these days

As for Max, it looks likely that he will be discharged today. I will go later today to retrieve him from the hospital. I feel a bit bad that we haven't paid as much attention to Max lately as we have to Sam, but we'll make it up to Max, I promise.
